The Kona Coffee You Get From Costco And Walmart Might Be Fake!

Whenever you go to Hawaii, the one item you must bring back to the mainland if you're a coffee drink is the classic Kona coffee. It's known for the red beans that are handpicked from small family farms int he Kona district. The coffee has a distinct taste because of the volcanic soil and mountain elevation. When you're out shopping at places like Walmart or Costco, you might get really excited when you see your favorite island coffee on the mainland with the "Pure 100% Kona" label. However, it turns out it might actually be fake Kona coffee!

According to the LA Times, Kona growers and farmers believe that "competitors falsely label cheap commodity beans, flooding the market, depressing prices and damaging Kona’s reputation." The only way to tell if the coffee is real or not is by putting both coffees through a lab test. Hawaiian farms are accusing Amazon, Costco, Walmart, and 18 other companies of selling fake Kona. They filed a court case earlier this year and are suing for "unspecified damages, a halt to sales and a national advertising campaign setting the record straight, hope to qualify the case as a class action representing all Kona growers."

The brands in question are Gold Coffee Roasters Inc., the Kroger Co., Copper Moon Coffee, L&K Coffee Co., Cameron’s Coffee and Distribution Co., and Boyer’s Coffee Co. During lab testing, they do contain Kona however it's less than 10% so the amount is so little it could be deceptive.
